Meet Me in St. Gallen: That Intense and Consuming Kind of Love

Valentine’s Day – I decided to watch Meet Me in St. Gallen with friends. We’ve heard and read so many good reviews, so I thought, “why not give it a shot?

After watching the movie, a lot of the movie goers went, “Awwww…” And I told my friends, “It makes sense. I think it was the right thing to do.” This movie reminds me of two things – how it has the Before Sunrise/Before Sunset feels and how it reminds us of why we love Sharon’s love story so much.

I used to be a Celeste. I say what’s on my mind, I let myself fall in love and be consumed by it, I crave for perfect moments and memories, and I use my pains and heartbreaks to become productive.

When I was still single in Manila, I used to go out on dates A LOT. I’m the one who just tries things out and if it works, it works. If it doesn’t, let it go. It did leave me broken hearted sometimes, but I thought it was worth it. I learn from every relationship, I get stronger, and it gives me a new subject to write about ala Taylor Swift.

Writing About My Heartbreaks and Struggles

I’ve fallen in and out of love countless times. I have experienced that intense and consuming kind of love. It hurts like hell when it ended, but I had no regrets. Every relationship, may it be official or not, have taught me so much. I learned how to love myself more, prioritize my well-being before someone else’s, and that I cannot give the love I do not have inside me. If you would notice my blog posts around 2013 to 2014, you will see how I talked a lot about my relationships. I was so inspired ala-Taylor Swift. But it was not just about the happy kind of inspiration, but more about my struggles, pains, and how complicated my love story was. When I got into a steady relationship, I would suddenly run out of things to write because I get so happy and satisfied. I’m not complaining, but it does affect how I write.

Choosing the Love You Deserve

***** MAJOR SPOILER ALERT*****

Remember how Sharon said in a post that R was her greatest love? And then there’s this tweet that says, “Robin was bliss, but Kiko is home. I will choose home every time.” And remember that line by Patty (Iza Calzado) from the movie, Starting Over Again, about her relationship with Marco?

Now, our love may be quiet and boring but it is sure. With the right amount of trust and love, and even an allowance for mistake. I love him Ginny and in love, there is no fear.

Celeste’s love for Jesse was the intense and consuming kind. It defined her art, her works, and her whole self. She lost herself to the love and pain she had for Jesse. So when she met Tobias, it may not be as intense and great as Jesse’s, but it was the kind of love that kept her sane and made her a better person. And I will always choose that kind of love. It got me thinking that the reason why “the one that got away” person exists is because we chose the love that is best for us. And I believe there is nothing wrong with that.

Meet Me in St. Gallen will be included in my list of favorite local chick flicks along with Starting Over Again, That Thing Called Tadhana, A Second Chance, and Till My Heartaches End. I may have been triggered by the cheating part, since I literally mildly shouted “pakshet kayong mga manloloko kayo” (Fuck Shit! You cheaters!) inside the movie house; but I still enjoyed the movie. I still feel for both characters and I applaud how Celeste’s character grew and matured from being a reckless lover to being a better and more mature woman.

Hope you are having a wonderful week. The heatwave continues here unfortunately, so uncomfortable!

  2. Your love story is so good to hear. It really made me think. Love hasn't found me yet. LOL Nothing has panned out unfortunately, but looking back I don't think I would want to be married to anyone I dated. HaHaHa Great post.

  4. I've never seen this movie! Sounds like one of those that makes you remember it for years to come. I agree that every relationship has taught me so much. It's prepared me for the one I'm in today, and have been in for the last five years. I've grown a lot!!

  5. This movie sounds so good! It is interesting how we experience different kinds of love, and deal with them in different way throughout our lives. For a long time I was the kind of person who gave way too much of myself away in a relationship and it was so draining. With Ben, I finally have someone who allows me to have MY space and my needs met, which is so much healthier. To be in love is an amazing thing, but it's NOT an easy thing!

  6. I think I can relate too, it's always the more complicated relationship that stirs and consumes you the most. But it's always the right one that gives you peace and home and that is what I will also choose. I haven't seen this movie yet but I will check it out in few more months in TFC. Thanks for the fun review dear.
