Love Your Body and Stay Healthy

Yesterday while I was blog hopping, I dropped by Honey Andrade's new blog post which asks everyone if we have an obligation to stay healthy because she read a blog about someone being willfully fat and then a comment saying that the person is "under no obligation to stay healthy" and telling everyone else to mind their own business about body and healthy. That is why I felt the urge to tell everyone about my own point of view. The point of view of someone who is plus-size and trying to lose weight.

I Love My Body - FACT!

I'm plus-size and definitely still proud of myself.  I mean my size never became a hindrance in achieving the things I want so I'm totally fine with being fat actually. I support people who promote body acceptance because we should never be discouraged to reach our dreams whatever size or shape we are in. Even though I'm plus size, I'm quite energetic and very active. Ask my officemates!  People may have commented that I should lose weight because I'd be prettier; but it made me more stubborn and discouraged to lose weight. You see, I believe that one's weight should never define how beautiful a person is.

About Wanting to Lose Weight

I declared that 2012 will be my year. This year I will change myself for the better and part of that change is losing and weight and being healthier. The main reasons for wanting to lose weight is (1) because I have hormonal imbalance and (2) I have a knee injury. And my OB and ortho asked me to lose weight for my own health. Thus, I have finally decided to do it this year. I promised myself to be a regular in the gym and go on a diet since I really do eat a lot especially on rice and burgers! I was a fast food lover. Being fat wasn't very healthy for me now so it's about time to move my ass.

Still Promoting Body Acceptance

FACT still remains, that even though I'm aiming on losing weight, I still support body acceptance. We should never be ashamed of how thin or fat we are because it can never be the basis for our success. Remember Lady Gaga's song, Born This Way? Of course, you do! "I'm on the right track, baby, I was born to survive!" People will give us a piece of their mind about how we don't look pretty for them or whatever; but it should never ever bring us down; instead, it should encourage us to do better and prove them that we can do great things whatever our shape or size is.

However, we should still keep in mind that no matter how much we patronize our shape or size, our health should still come first. Thin or fat, we can either be healthy or unhealthy. If you love being plus size and you're healthy, go ahead. But if you're plus size promoting body acceptance yet you're unhealthy, I think you're fighting for the wrong reasons. Please think it over. Are you only promoting body acceptance because you cannot give time for a quick workout at the gym or you just can't stop yourself from eating a lot? Think it over.

This may sound cliche but health is wealth. If you think you're doing good by being plus-size then take care of your health too so you can live longer and enjoy life more. Right? If you really love your body then you should take good care of it. I'm not asking you to lose weight. I'm asking you to stay healthy if you love your body.

  1. Our bodies come in different shapes and sizes, kahit pa all of us eat the same amount and type of food, and do the same exercises, iba iba tayo ng magiging shape and size. And that, we have to accept naman talaga.

I am very affected with this issue. Yes, we should accept and love our bodies. But some people seem to be using that 'campaign' as an excuse to remain unhealthy. To love our body means we should treat it well and take care of it.

Another pet peeve, yung quote na real women have curves. We can't empower and uplift other women, by putting down others. Skinny women are real women too. They are just born that way.

This is a good post Gellie.

    1. Thanks Rae. Parang namimisinterpret nga ng iba yung campaign about body acceptance. It's to encourage plus size and even skinny women na whatever their body shape is, they shouldn't be discouraged to excel and do great things; but if it's affecting their health, they should do something about it.

I hope those people get the real message of the campaign and not use it as an excuse to remain unhealthy...

  2. This is a great post, Gellie. It's always sad when people twist things for their own advantage.

  3. Hi Gellie! I love this post! I'm currently overweight due to a sedentary lifestyle however I'm actually happier now compared before. No I'm not happy because I'm fat but because my circumstances now make me feel emotionally well. And yes, I want to lose weight because of health reasons. I'm getting heel pains and I bet this is because of the extra weight they have to endure.

I accept the reality that I'm overweight now but I won't accept that this'll go on as long as I live. My family has a history of cardiac arrest so as much as possible, I'm going to do my best to live longer and die of old age. I also love my body and myself that's why I'm not going to let it go with disregard. :)

  5. Cool post. I could definitely relate, I'm not really what could be considered as thin as well. There are certain things about my body that I want to change but I still love it though, nonetheless. :D I support and join you in your quest to health. :)

  7. In today’s generation, there are many foods and recipes that have been introduced to many people around the world. This is because eating is our endless basic needs to make our body stronger and healthier. However, eating alone doesn’t make all things good especially when we talk about our health. It is very important to consider the foods we eat if these are nutritious or could cause health problems. We are aware that there are many health problems caused by having unhealthy eating as well as unhealthy lifestyle. We can always prevent these diseases if we eat nutritious foods and perform regular exercises. Thank you for this healthy information you have shared on this article.
