OOTD: Be Your Own Woman

I remember hearing one time at a washroom in a mall:

Older Sister: Siguraduhin mo na yung magiging boyfriend mo mabibigay lahat ng gusto mo katulad ng ginagawa ko sa'yo! (Make sure that your future boyfriend will be able to give you whatever you wants just like what I do for you!)

Younger Sister: Syempre naman! (Of course!)

It just feels off that big sister here is teaching younger sister to rely on a man financially. Well, that's how my mind interprets the scenario. Plus I don't know why they had to discuss that all of a sudden in a public washroom while a lot of people can hear them.

I never liked the idea of a woman supposedly relying on a man financially. I work hard, I have my own career, and I pay my own bills. I do not need to financially rely on a man. I can provide for myself, thank you. To tell you quite frankly, I have paid for a date before and I don't mind it. Even with my current partner, we prefer sharing the bill or taking turns because we are both financially capable and independent.

What is my point, you ask?

I would like to encourage women to learn how to stand on their own two feet. Gone are the days when women are helpless and can do nothing. In this day and age, we can do anything. Immediately after graduating college, I made sure that I will no longer rely on my parents and took the first job that came my way and started from there. Eventually, after gaining some experience, I finally had the courage and confidence to apply for a job I'd love to do, was able to save up money, tried investing, did blogging and writing, and now I'm even trying to start my own business (gelleeshop.com)!

Woman, believe that you are powerful and that you can do things. Don't let yourself be defined by a man. Make a name for yourself. Find a partner who will support you in what you do and can also stand on his own feet. Work together and build a future together. That is how things should be.

When I was a little kid, I thought women are supposed to be just at home and doing chores while it's the man who works and makes a living. My dream used to be just being a mom and a wife. That's it. There is nothing wrong with being a stay-at-home wife and mother but after seeing how women can also create an impact and make a difference in the society, I guess I'd want to be that more. I want to be a woman of my own while being a mother and a wife as well in the future.

  1. I enjoyed reading your post. I agree we women should stand on our own. We should not rely on anyone else for I know we can do it. Girl Power!
