OOTD: Standing Like a Rock

I always tell people that I’m very ambitious and driven; but behind it all, I am also a person of integrity, or at least I try my best to be. It is easy to be persuaded and blinded by the superficial things in this world; so before I make any decisions, I make sure that I would base it, not only for my own sake, but also if it would hurt other people or  go against what I believe in and stand for.

A year or more back, I might be the kind of person who won’t care about other things as long as my career is doing well and I’m getting my job done. But when I started getting involved in developmental work through my current job for a non-profit organization, my perspective changed. All of a sudden, I started caring for other people as well and I started to wholeheartedly support the advocacy of the organization I work for.

The decision I have recently made has fully changed me and has helped me become less selfish. I am not fully righteous, because I believe that no one will ever be; but, finally, I have something I am most willing to fight for other than my own personal selfish intentions. For the first time I wasn’t asking for “what’s in it for me” but more of “what can I do to help.

After observing how some people have been acting, I have finally come to the realization that, indeed, even the most generous person can change once you offer him money and power. Some people are willing to do anything just to save themselves regardless if it’s at the expense of other people. Some people will forget the real reason why they are doing what they are doing just as long as you will give them security. Some people cannot take risks simply because they are not wholeheartedly committed to what they, initially, got themselves into.

This fight is not about my earthly and superficial wants. This fight is for what I believe is right. I chose the path that was not easy; but I would rather be here than choose the easy way out of things, settle for what gives me security, go against the advocacy I support, use people for my own personal benefit and be a blind follower.
I am making a stand.

In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.” – Thomas Jefferson.

  4. Get involved. This is our world. One trait I hate most is crab mentality and another is indifference. It's just us here, we might as well help each other out. Hope you can join us in our next Tabang Tambayan event!
