Going Curly and Getting Bangs

I’ve been super busy with my full-time work lately that’s why I’ve been gone from blogging for almost a month. But hey, I’m back and with a new hair style! So what’s up with the new hair, you ask?

Well I’ve been watching K-Dramas lately and the last one I’ve finished watching, Boys Over Flowers (Don’t judge because I just started out and I used to not be a fan), had a really adorable main girl lead. Geum Jan Di (Ku Hye Sun) is so cute and I just fell in love with her short hair and bangs combo. That is why after watching a few episodes, I decided to cut my hair for the bangs. No hair stylist would ever give me bangs since, according to them, it doesn’t look good on me. I guess that day I just didn’t care. I wanted bangs so I’ll get bangs. If no one would give me bangs, I’ll give myself one. Ha!

A few more episodes and I reached the one when she (Geum Jan Di) attended a party at a boat or something. She was dressed up so nicely and she had short curly hair still with bangs. That made me want to get my hair curled but I was quite afraid it won’t look good on me. And, of course, Geum Jan Di’s hair wasn’t permanently curled. It was just styled that way.

My solution?

I tried out my “old curling routine.” I tied my hair in small buns and instead of using hair spray the next day, I sprayed my hair with the Snoe Hair Heroes Super Fresh in Sage Tree and Peppermint and slept on it. The next day, I removed the small buns and it didn’t come out equally good on both sides. Yikes! One was curly good and the other was… just shitty. I had no choice since I would already be late for work so I just tied my hair all together and went to work. People laughed at my hair and I was so disappointed with the result. Now I want to have it curled permanently. Ugh!

Getting My Hair Curled Professionally, Finally!

So I called out a few salons about their perming services and almost all of them are too expensive for my budget. I’ve been frugal lately because I just recently bought a new place with my husband and I’m maintaining two insurance/investment accounts so… PRIORITIES! I told my husband that if I won’t be able to find a good and decent salon offering a perming service for at the most PHP 2,000.00, my hair is not meant to be permed.

Hello Teal Salon!

When I checked on salons in Katipunan, I wasn’t expecting to find salons which would be within my budget; but lo and behold, I did. Teal Salon is located along Katipunan Ave., just across Ateneo De Manila University (just a quick note, I wasn’t paid nor sponsored a perm to blog about them LOL). The natural curling/perming process (as how they’d call it) is PHP 1,500.00 for short hair and I took that one. They actually also suggested I keep my bangs straight since… Short curly bangs might be a bit awkward and I’m pretty happy with my current bangs.

The place had reasonable prices for their services and the place was pretty comfortable. The moment I got seated, a bottled water was placed in front of me and while they didn’t offer magazines like other local salons, there are outlets per station where you can, probably, charge your phone in case you’d be using it for entertainment. There was also a time when I’d have to lie on their hair washing chair (or whatever it is called) for a while and it was so cool that they even had a TV on the ceiling so while you’re getting your hair shampooed or if you needed to stay there for a while like me, you won’t get too bored.

They used different rod sizes for my hair so that my curls would look more natural in the long run. They used bigger rods underneath and smaller rods for the hair on top. The result?

It was just what I wanted.

Maintaining Curly Hair

So I didn’t get my hair wet for 24 hours and for the first 3 days, I only used conditioner on it. I only used shampoo after the third day. I would also use the Dove Style + Care Curls Defining Mousse every day to keep the curls in place. My hair isn’t as curly as it was on day one and I’m totally fine with it. I wasn’t aiming, anyway, for the super curly look but more of a natural curly-wavy kind of style and that’s how it just is. Oh and I love my new curly hair because I don’t need to comb it. LOL

Right after the perming treatment :)

Mudpacking using the Ella Naturals Black is Back Active Charcoal Mudpack with my curly hair :)

One of my latest photos. Wavy curly hair is <3

My youngest sister also has curly hair now but hers is more defined. :)
So my advice to those who would want to try a new look? Don’t be afraid to be you! When I got bangs I was compared to Dora the Explorer but I just shrugged it off. When I got my hair curled I was compared to another person again but… Meh. Do it for yourself and not because people tell you it’s what you’re supposed to look like. ;)

  4. I really loved when you vut your hair in the first place and with the bangs and the curls you just look so cuper cute :D I think its great when you are able to play around a little with your hair. With mine its difficult, as I always keep in very short and I have natural curls that I like so I just leave them where they are and look more or less the same every day :D
Thank you a lot for your last comment on my blog : )
    Sending much love!

  6. Aw this look is so cute on you! I love that you took a little inspiration from a K-film too haha. I think I got a perm when I was like 13 once, but it didn't hold well. My hair is naturally wavy and some days I really enjoy wearing it just natural. :)

  10. YOU LOOK GORGEOUS, I LIVE! Seriously, you pull it off so well, I'm jealous! I've tried to cut my hair chin-length and I couldn't pull it off. I tried getting straight-cut full bangs and I somehow pulled it off. But I don't think I could work this look as well as you do! Also, my hair is stubbornly straight. I'd love to try getting a perm at that salon, thank you for the recommendation! Do you know how much they charge perming for medium-length hair? :)
